Golf Shoes At The Ryder Cup -What Will They Wear?

It’s thought the tax man might take a great interest in this Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in three weeks’ time. Sure, a lot of them must play and follow golf, but this seems to be for a different reason. All the 24 players in the Ryder Cup will be fitted out in the official European and American team uniforms chosen for each of the five rounds of golf.

Although the uniforms have been selected, the golfers may choose to wear the golf shoes of their choice, and that will make them liable for a very large tax bill of several million pounds.

It seems that if players are paid for using equipment or clothing at the Ryder Cup then they are liable for tax including their golf shoes. For Tiger Woods, that means handing over a share of his current US$80m five-year deal with Nike.

The Ryder Cup players are not paid for playing in the tournament but if the players select to wear sponsored golf footwear they may received a rather large tax bill. Certainly, Tiger Woods could save if he switches the golf shoes he plans to wear during the Ryder Cup. And the tax man will want a share of the endorsement income from overseas-based golfers like Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington earn for wearing branded products.
